I probably overspent for a basic binocular but based on my experience, you usually get what you pay for. I brought the older model with the aluminum frame which is now changing over to plastic on the newer model. I believe the total weight savings between the two models is about an ounce. This is a wonderful binocular with sharp optics. I own a Steiner 8x30 military model which I like very much and wanted to upgrade to a slightly higher powered one. There may be imported components but the binocular is thoroughly German in design and quality.
